ART COLLECIVE: αὐτodɪkˈtaːt
The collective was built around the premise that art cannot be taught. Founded by Shermin Voshmgir (aka KAMIKATSE) together with Peter Backer, Kris Kind, and Mary Ocher, the collective reflects a collaboration grounded in shared skepticism toward formalized art education and the economies that surround it.
The collective was active mainly between 2012 and 2016 between Vienna & Berlin. Here some reminiscent traces on facebook.
RAISON D’ETRE
αὐτodɪkˈtaːt brought together mostly self-taught, autodidactic and self-funded artists who shared the conviction that meaningful artistic practice emerges from within: through individual exploration, experimentation & exchange.
With trusted peers rather than through formal artistic institutions.
It was also grounded in a critical view of the structures surrounding contemporary art, because art institutions do not operate in a vacuum: Galleries, foundations, collections, funding bodies, and curatorial networks are often entangled with a broader financial art complex in which art can function not only as cultural expression, but also as an asset, a vehicle for speculative value, tax optimization, social status, and reputational laundering. The mechanisms through which art is funded, exhibited, collected & legitimized inevitably influence which practices become visible and which artists are able to sustain their work.
