MONEY PATTERNS is a nonfiction book about the hidden architecture of money—and about the strange fact that we are expected to spend, earn, save, borrow, invest and vote on monetary policy without ever being taught what money actually is.
The book explores how competing schools of economic thought explain different parts of the monetary system from different assumptions, yet offer no shared framework for understanding money as a socio-economic infrastructure.
It looks beyond the coin—the physical representation we tend to mistake for money itself—to examine the much larger infrastructure behind it. It also asks why an institution so fundamental to modern life remains so poorly understood, not only by the people who use it every day, but often even by the experts who design and govern our monetary and financial systems.
Drawing on history, economics, social science, technology and systems thinking, MONEY PATTERNS looks beyond these disciplinary divides to identify recurring patterns across different forms of money: how they coordinate trust, information, incentives, power and exchange across time and space.
